What Is Discord Nitro?

Discord Nitro is Discord's premium subscription service. It unlocks cosmetic features, higher limits, and quality-of-life improvements across the platform. There are currently two tiers: Nitro Basic and Nitro. A third tier, Nitro Classic, was retired in 2022.

Nitro is entirely optional. Discord's core features — messaging, voice chat, video calls, screen sharing, server participation — are all free. Nitro adds polish and removes certain restrictions.

Nitro Basic

Nitro Basic is the entry-level tier. It provides the most commonly requested features at a lower price point.

Custom Emoji Everywhere

Free users can only use custom emoji in the server where those emoji were uploaded. Nitro Basic unlocks custom emoji from any server you're in, usable everywhere — other servers, DMs, group chats. This is the feature most users cite as the primary reason for subscribing.

Increased Upload Limit (50MB)

Free accounts are limited to 25MB per file. Nitro Basic doubles this to 50MB, which covers most images, short videos, and documents. For users who frequently share media in Discord, this removes the most common friction.

Custom Profile

Nitro Basic allows some profile customization — including setting a profile banner color and a limited set of visual tweaks. Full profile themes with custom colors and effects require the higher Nitro tier.

Server Boosts (2 Included)

Each Nitro subscription includes 2 server boosts that you can apply to any server. Boosts unlock server-wide perks at different levels — better audio quality, more emoji slots, animated server icon, higher upload limits for all members, and more. These boosts are removed if you cancel Nitro.

Profile Themes and Colors

Animated decorations that play on your profile when someone opens it. Effects range from subtle particle animations to more elaborate visual displays. They're seasonal and often tied to Discord promotions or events.

Cosmetic borders and rings that surround your profile picture. Decorations are separate from the avatar itself — they're rendered as an overlay. Some are included with Nitro, others are purchased separately from the Decoration Shop.

Longer Messages (4000 Characters)

Free users have a 2000-character limit per message. Nitro doubles this to 4000 characters. Useful for long-form messages, explanations, or sharing text that would otherwise need to be split across multiple messages.

Super Reactions

Animated, oversized reaction emotes that appear prominently on messages. They're more visible than standard reactions and add a visual flair to conversations. Nitro subscribers get a limited number of super reactions per week.

Classic was discontinued when Discord restructured its Nitro tiers. Existing Classic subscribers were transitioned to other plans. The Classic tier is no longer available for new subscriptions.

The Nitro Badge

All Nitro tiers display a badge on the subscriber's profile. The badge appears alongside other badges (Staff, HypeSquad, Early Supporter, etc.) and is visible to anyone who views the profile.

For long-term subscribers, the badge may display a year counter or anniversary decoration, indicating how many consecutive years the user has maintained their subscription.

Discord doesn't publicly expose the exact Nitro tier someone is on. However, several indicators reveal whether someone has Nitro:

Is Nitro Worth It?

This depends entirely on how you use Discord. If you primarily text chat in a few servers, the free tier covers everything you need. If you're active in many communities and want custom emoji everywhere, Nitro Basic delivers high value for the cost. If you stream, share large files, or care about profile customization, full Nitro is the comprehensive option.

The features are cosmetic and quality-of-life — Discord never locks core communication functionality behind Nitro.

Nitro Gifts and Promotions

Discord occasionally partners with other services (Xbox Game Pass, Epic Games, YouTube Premium) to offer free Nitro trials. These typically grant 1-3 months of Nitro at no cost. After the trial, you're charged the regular subscription price unless you cancel.
