What Is Discord Nitro?

Discord Nitro is Discord's premium subscription service. It unlocks cosmetic features, higher limits, and quality-of-life improvements across the platform. There are currently two tiers: Nitro Basic and Nitro. A third tier, Nitro Classic, was retired in 2022.

Nitro is entirely optional. Discord's core features — messaging, voice chat, video calls, screen sharing, server participation — are all free. Nitro adds polish and removes certain restrictions.

Nitro Basic

Nitro Basic is the entry-level tier. It provides the most commonly requested features at a lower price point.

Custom Emoji Everywhere

Free users can only use custom emoji in the server where those emoji were uploaded. Nitro Basic unlocks custom emoji from any server you're in, usable everywhere — other servers, DMs, group chats. This is the feature most users cite as the primary reason for subscribing.

Increased Upload Limit (50MB)

Free accounts are limited to 25MB per file. Nitro Basic doubles this to 50MB, which covers most images, short videos, and documents. For users who frequently share media in Discord, this removes the most common friction.

Custom Profile

Nitro Basic allows some profile customization — including setting a profile banner color and a limited set of visual tweaks. Full profile themes with custom colors and effects require the higher Nitro tier.

Nitro Badge

A small badge appears on your profile indicating you're a Nitro subscriber. The badge is visible to anyone who views your profile in Discord or on discord.dog.

Nitro (Full)

Full Nitro includes everything in Basic plus significantly more features. This is the tier that unlocks Discord's full cosmetic potential.

Animated Avatar and Banner

Upload a GIF as your profile picture and it animates everywhere — in chat, member lists, profile panels. You can also set an animated banner on your profile. This is one of the most visible Nitro perks since other users see the animation constantly.

500MB Upload Limit

A massive jump from the 50MB Basic limit. 500MB accommodates long video recordings, high-resolution photo sets, large project files, and essentially anything you'd want to share. Discord stores and hosts these files on their CDN.

HD Video Streaming

Nitro unlocks screen sharing and Go Live streaming at up to 4K resolution and 60fps. Free users are limited to 720p 30fps. This matters most for streaming games, design work, or presentations where detail and smooth motion are important.

Server Boosts (2 Included)

Each Nitro subscription includes 2 server boosts that you can apply to any server. Boosts unlock server-wide perks at different levels — better audio quality, more emoji slots, animated server icon, higher upload limits for all members, and more. These boosts are removed if you cancel Nitro.

Profile Themes and Colors

Full Nitro enables custom profile color themes. You can set two accent colors that create a gradient background on your profile card. This is a purely cosmetic feature but gives profiles a distinctive look. discord.dog displays these theme colors when viewing a Nitro user's profile.

Profile Effects

Animated decorations that play on your profile when someone opens it. Effects range from subtle particle animations to more elaborate visual displays. They're seasonal and often tied to Discord promotions or events.

Avatar Decorations

Cosmetic borders and rings that surround your profile picture. Decorations are separate from the avatar itself — they're rendered as an overlay. Some are included with Nitro, others are purchased separately from the Decoration Shop.

Longer Messages (4000 Characters)

Free users have a 2000-character limit per message. Nitro doubles this to 4000 characters. Useful for long-form messages, explanations, or sharing text that would otherwise need to be split across multiple messages.

Super Reactions

Animated, oversized reaction emotes that appear prominently on messages. They're more visible than standard reactions and add a visual flair to conversations. Nitro subscribers get a limited number of super reactions per week.

Custom Sounds

Upload custom soundboard clips that play in voice channels. Standard users have access to default sounds; Nitro users can upload their own. The clips are short (up to 5 seconds) and play for everyone in the voice channel.

Custom App Icons

Change the Discord app icon on your device to one of several themed options. This is purely cosmetic and only affects your own device — other users can't see which icon you've chosen.

Custom Server Avatars

Set a different profile picture for each server you're in. Your global avatar remains the default, but you can override it on a per-server basis. Useful for users who want different identities in different communities.

Nitro Classic (Retired)

Discord Nitro Classic was available from 2018 to late 2022. It offered a middle ground between what's now Basic and full Nitro — custom emoji, animated avatar, 50MB uploads, and HD streaming, but without server boosts, profile effects, or 500MB uploads.

Classic was discontinued when Discord restructured its Nitro tiers. Existing Classic subscribers were transitioned to other plans. The Classic tier is no longer available for new subscriptions.

The Nitro Badge

All Nitro tiers display a badge on the subscriber's profile. The badge appears alongside other badges (Staff, HypeSquad, Early Supporter, etc.) and is visible to anyone who views the profile.

For long-term subscribers, the badge may display a year counter or anniversary decoration, indicating how many consecutive years the user has maintained their subscription.

See the Discord badges guide for a complete breakdown of every badge type.

Checking Someone's Nitro Status

Discord doesn't publicly expose the exact Nitro tier someone is on. However, several indicators reveal whether someone has Nitro:

  • Nitro badge on their profile
  • Animated avatar (GIF that plays) — requires full Nitro
  • Animated banner — requires full Nitro
  • Profile theme colors — custom gradient on profile card
  • Avatar decoration — cosmetic ring around avatar
  • Profile effects — animated decorations on profile

discord.dog displays all of these when viewing a user's profile. Visit discord.dog/{userId} to see their full profile including Nitro indicators, animated avatar (if applicable), theme colors, and badge collection.

Is Nitro Worth It?

This depends entirely on how you use Discord. If you primarily text chat in a few servers, the free tier covers everything you need. If you're active in many communities and want custom emoji everywhere, Nitro Basic delivers high value for the cost. If you stream, share large files, or care about profile customization, full Nitro is the comprehensive option.

The features are cosmetic and quality-of-life — Discord never locks core communication functionality behind Nitro.

Nitro Gifts and Promotions

Discord occasionally partners with other services (Xbox Game Pass, Epic Games, YouTube Premium) to offer free Nitro trials. These typically grant 1-3 months of Nitro at no cost. After the trial, you're charged the regular subscription price unless you cancel.

Nitro can also be gifted to other users through Discord's built-in gifting system. Gift links can be generated and sent via DM, and the recipient activates them on their account.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the differences between Nitro Basic and Nitro?

Nitro Basic includes custom emoji everywhere, 50MB uploads, custom profiles, and a Nitro badge. Full Nitro adds animated avatars, 500MB uploads, HD streaming, 2 server boosts, profile themes, avatar decorations, profile effects, super reactions, custom sounds, and longer messages (4000 characters).

Can I see if someone has Discord Nitro?

Yes. Nitro subscribers have a Nitro badge on their profile. You can check anyone's badges by visiting discord.dog and entering their user ID or username. discord.dog also shows Nitro-specific features like animated avatars, profile themes, and avatar decorations.

Is Discord Nitro Classic still available?

No. Discord Nitro Classic was discontinued and replaced by Nitro Basic in late 2022. Users who had an active Classic subscription were transitioned. Classic offered a middle ground between Basic and full Nitro, but that tier no longer exists for new subscribers.

Do I lose my Nitro features if I cancel?

Yes. When your Nitro subscription ends, you lose access to all Nitro features immediately. Animated avatars stop playing (showing the first frame), uploaded files above the free limit remain accessible but you can't upload new large files, and your server boosts are removed.

What happens to my server boosts if I cancel Nitro?

The 2 included server boosts from Nitro are removed when your subscription ends. If those boosts were keeping a server at a certain boost level, the server may lose that level and its associated perks.
